“Your music is a sensual delight!”
—Marilyn Thelen.

It is notoriously difficult to describe music in words.
Please listen to one or more pieces on this webpage for an idea of my ‘sound’.

Most of my music is written for solo piano. It ranges from children‘s teaching pieces
(I have worked for a number of years as a piano teacher)
to a concert etude of ‘transcendant’ difficulty.
I have also written for brass quintet, string orchestra, organ, guitar, voice, and synthesizer.

People are often surprised at the ease with which they relate to my sound,
which is unabashedly tonal and seeks to have a direct, visceral appeal on the listener.

A few biographical notes

Consecration has been recorded by the German brass quintet Blechlawine, and has also been arranged for symphonic band. Radio performances of my works include the folk song “My Beautiful Country” and “Seve,” (soprano and piano). In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s I was active as a pianist and synthesist, performing concerts in the Northwest. My cover article “Electronic Orchestration” (Electronic Musician, Nov. 1991) is a standard reference in the field. In that year I also performed the electronic world premiere of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations on two synthesizers, an event featured in Keyboard magazine.

I am presently engaged in setting to music the French poems of my grandmother, Celine Axelos (1902–1994), whose two published books of poetry appeared in the mid–twentieth century (Editions Regain, Monte Carlo). I am especially interested in making contact with soprano singers interested in performing or recording this melodious, new music.

I received Bachelor’s Degrees in Music and German at the University of Oregon (Eugene) in 1973. My professors in musical composition were Hal Owen (counterpoint) and Homer Keller (technique, forms). I studied piano under Alexander Hrisanides (Rumania) and later with Adam Kapuchinski (Poland). I also have a certificate in Electronic Music.
